The Black Toe Relay is a 12/24 -hour relay that occurs on a 5 mile trail loop at Hardin Farm in Watertown, TN. The race will have teams of 2 or 4, however, individuals may endeavor to complete the challenge, though we are not responsible for frozen phalanges or lost minds. The goal is to complete as many loops as possible in the given time period, with one team member running at a time. Simple, right?!


There is a new single track section on the downhill off the big hill. This section is fun and fast and adds a lot to the course.


Each runner receives a hoodie custom to the year they run.

Beer Mug Awards
There will be a large engraved beer mug awarded to anyone who can do the following:

  • 12 hour  50 miles solo
  • 24 Hour  100 miles solo

Team size: Individual, 2, or 4 person teams (male, female, and co-ed)

Loop size: 5 mile trail, ~1400 feet of ascent, equal descent

Aid: Starting line will serve as the aid station, which will have GU’s, water, gatorade, and light snacks for everyone.

Packet Pick Up: Will be held at race location the day of the race. Please try to come early  (7:30- 9:30am).

Main Rules:

  • One runner on the course at a time
  • Each runner must mark their time on the board when returning back from the 5 miles loop. This is the only way we an keep track of your time. This is based on the honor system. 
  • Each team member must complete at least one lap every 12 hours – If a team member is injured then this is not required
  • Must be self-supporting.  Runners are responsible for your own warmth, sleeping tent, and winter survival. We will provide light snacks, water and gatorade. 
  • At the conclusion of the race, runners are given a 15 min grace period to finish their final lap, after which a mile will be deducted for every 15 min they are late (for example, at 10:15 one mile is deducted, at 10:30 two miles, and so forth).
  • Littering on the course will subject you to disqualification
  • Due to the extreme weather at this time of year we reserve the right to cancel the event at any time. Final results will be calculated based on each runner’s placement at the call time as determined by that runner’s last completed lap. This rule is intended to be a last resort
  • If you are struggling at any point in the run, race officials will have the right to evaluate you, and it will be their call if you will be allowed to continue. These decisions will be made with your safety and desire to finish in mind
  • Runners may have crew support every lap. When helping, crew must stay at designated area on Slug Fest Row. Helping outside of the runners designated area on Slug Fest Row is not allowed
  • When checking in you will be asked to show your required materials described below. If you do not have these items you are subject to disqualification


  • Men 12/24 Hour  Solo –  1st, 2nd, and 3rd
  • Women 12/24 Hour  Solo –  1st, 2nd, and 3rd
  • 12/24 Hour 2 person team –  1st, 2nd, and 3rd
  • 12/24 Hour 4 person team –  1st, 2nd, and 3rd
  • Fastest Lap (First Place Only)
  • Best Team Name
  • Best Costume

What to Bring – You will be asked to show all required materials when signing in. Failure to have them could lead to disqualification

  • Required – Flashlights or headlamps will be required!!
  • Required – Water Bottles
  • Required – Long Sleeve technical shirt
  • Required – Warm jacket
  • Required – Gloves
  • Tent 
  • A very warm sleeping bag and pad to keep you off the ground
  • Food and drink for the long haul ahead
  • Tarps – To keep your camp area from getting muddy
  • Any pain medicine you might need
  • Small personal First Aid Kit
  • Fork, Knife, Plate – For noodles and to cut down on trash
  • Chairs to sit and rest in
  • Extra socks
  • Religious relics


The Trail

The trail is 5 miles and 1,400 feet in gain per loop. With the combination of freezing weather, long distances, tough terrain, and bad elevation gain/loss this makes for one of the toughest runs created in TN. You will have minimal support so please prepare properly.

    Would I have the option to run for 24 hours if I sign up for 12? Would I only qualify for the 12 hr awards if I did this?

    I am interested in this run and would like to know how many people are expected to come out like Cora wanted to know. I would hate to be the only guy running around a farm for 12 or 24 hours. How many solos are expected to attend. There any way to see who has registered for the event? Also, how will the trails be? Will it be easy to find where we are going? Will the trails be covered with leaves (I am assuming so). Is the run pretty or is it through the jungle and you’ll feel like you’re running in a closet the whole race?

    What is this vegetarian crap you are talking about for the food? If there isn’t meat in it, why would I eat it during this hellacious endeavor?

    Hi I am very interested in this run. I did the Loretta Lynn’s trail run earlier this year and had a great time. I have a few questions before I register.

    1. I have a camper trailer. Are those allowed on the premisis and if so can I run a generator?
    2. How many people do you expect to enter the run?
